I know most of you reading this blog aren't familiar with Orthodox Judaism, but I'll give you a little crash course on the Jewish Sabbath here.
On the Sabbath, we don't cook, use electricity, rip paper towels, watch TV, check email, etc. We do pray, eat, sing, read books, have long conversations (because no one has anywhere they need to run to), look at photo albums, sit out in the sun, and more.
But for all of this good stuff to happen, you have to hustle on Fridays. On an average Friday I study for the bar, cook a three course meal, clean a good chunk of the apartment, call everyone in my family, blog, and set the lights/rip paper towels/tidy up. And get myself dressed, too:).
It's always a little insane, and there's the special-for-Orthodox-Jews Murphy's Law that says that if something has to go wrong, it will be a half hour before sundown on Friday. But I love it. So I decided to pop in and mention that:)
On a totally different topic, I made this page for my first challenge at the Who's That Girl blog. You can check out the other great pages and my journaling at this link!
And, continuing with the Jewish theme, I was excited to design for Crafting Jewish Style this month! My projects are up on their blog!
What are your plans this weekend for the Fourth??
Love the layout girl and congrats on the GDT spot!
ReplyDeleteGreat LO! Enjoy your night!
ReplyDeletethe only plan i have is to turn my daughter's room (she moved out in april) into a guest room. a little sad but excited that we will have a dedicated guest room for visitors.
ReplyDeleteGreat page!!! I love that we are on a DT together. And I love that you share with us!! Have a nice 4th weekend!
ReplyDeletelove your page. I work with an Orthodox family, who have 2 special needs kiddos and a typical toddler. life is super crazy in that house, especially on Fridays and Jewish holidays. I do love the treats she sends home with me when she's been cooking all day though. no plans for the 4th around here, other than rest and relaxation. happy 4th!
ReplyDeleteI love reading about your traditions! :)
ReplyDeletelovely page - i hope you had a good sabbath yesterday!
ReplyDeleteI am fascinated any time I read about someone's religious beliefs....so much to learn. Love the layout....you're uber talented!! Congratulations on the GDT spot, too! They are so very lucky to have you!
ReplyDeleteCute layout. My SIL has an oven that has a warming thingy for this.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful LO! Congrats on the GDT and I hope your weekend was great.
ReplyDeleteWe are also Sabbath keepers, and though not Jewish, there's alot of Friday busyness getting everything ready for the day of rest! Congratulations on the Guest Design - I really enjoy your layouts and how you share your traditions and faith so freely! Hope you had a great 4th of July.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! It's nice to see into your Friday. Why don't you rip paper towels? Is tha considered "work"? I grew up with a bunch of Jewish classmates-- I can't count the number of bar/bat mitvah's I attended-- but none were Orthodox, so it's great to learn more! I remember once babysitting at a house where they kept kosher when I was about 15. I was so terrified I'd do something wrong that I just didn't eat the whole night! lol!
ReplyDeleteHey Lisa--I'd love to answer your question, but since I can't see your profile I don't know how to find you! Feel free to email me though!
ReplyDeleteI love reading about your traditions. It's so cool that you have so much faith. Love the LO, too!
ReplyDeleteHey thanks for stopping by my blog :) Nice lesson about your traditions :) and of course the LO is fabulous :)
ReplyDeleteThis was all news to me and it was very interesting. So can you scrapbook on the Sabbath...? sorry if that's a dumb question...
